Graduate training is a major focus of the Witebsky Center for Microbial Pathogenesis and Immunology. Over the past ten years, over 50 students have reeceived their Ph.D. training in Center laboratories. In addition, over 30 postdoctoral fellows have participated in research projects in these laboratories. Graduates and fellows have followed many career paths since finishing their training. Several have gone on to receive further research experience in internationally renowned laboratories and to assume academic positions in colleges or universities. Others have undertaken careers in industrial research while some have continued their education and entered various professional careers. Currently, more than 40 Ph.D. students are receiving research training and 11 post-doctoral fellows are members of the group. The Center has an NIH Training Grant for both pre- and post-doctoral students in Microbial Pathogenesis, and efforts are underway to develop a similar training grant for Immunology. In addition to degree-directed training, members of the Center participate in various minority outreach training programs. One seldom-appreciated fact is that a large number of undergraduate students are also active, creative participants in our research efforts. These young trainees often enter professional schools, or continue their graduate training and follow productive research careers.
