Parasitology research is focused in three areas of intense interest. The Read and Williams laboratories investigate aspects of Trypanosoma kinetoplast RNA synthesis and processing and mitochondrial protein synthesis and assembly. The Read laboratory concentrates on the molecular aspects of RNA editing. The Williams laboratory is studying the role of unique RNA-binding proteins in ribosomal biogenesis. Collaboration between the Williams and Ruyechan laboratories has yielded new insights into Trypanosoma nucleic acid binding proteins. The Read and Williams groups have also collaborated on a project focused on post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in Plasmodium.
The Niles laboratory is collaborating with the laboratory of Phillip T. LoVerde at the Southwest Foudnation for Medical Research in studies designed to define the mechanism of female specific gene expression and cellular signal transduction pathways.
