Cryptococcus neoformans

Research in mycology is focused on the how the pathogenic fungus Cryptococcus neoformans reprograms gene expression at the post-transcriptional level in response to stress. The Panepinto lab is working to identify RNA binding proteins and their respective cognate transcripts that regulate stress adaptation in this important pathogen. In addition, the modulation of antifungal susceptibility of Cryptococcus neoformans and Aspergillus fumigatus by antibiotics and natural plant products is being investigated with the hope of identifying small molecules that can enhance the activity of available antifungal drugs.
