What is Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ)?

TMJ is the acronym associated with temporomandibular joint disorder. The temporomandibular joints can be found on each side of the face in front of the ears. The Merck Manual of Medical Information refers to the temporomandibular joint as "the most complicated joint in the body" because of its wide range of movement. It is one of the few joints that can move from side to side as well as backwards and forwards. It can also open and close like the hinge on a gate.

What can you do to help?

The citizens of New York State are being denied consideration for proper insurance coverage for diagnostic testing and treatment of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. There should be equal coverage for all anatomic parts of the body. Equal benefits for all medical disorders affecting all muscles, bones and joints of the body should be covered and no discrimination should be based on anatomic parts and or the discipline of the provider. Only benefits for conditions related to the bone and joints of the jaw are specially excluded at the present time. This is a medical condition treated by the dental profession and other medical therapies. When insurance companies refuse to implement updated protocol, the citizens are hindered from proper care. The citizens of the State of New York are being denied proper coverage. Please help the citizens of this state by voting for passage of this bill or co-sponsoring this bill.
