| A unique and important
feature of the State University of New York at Buffalo program
is the fact that it is the only surgical residency program
in the city. This provides an enormous patient population
as well as the mix of cases necessary to provide the broadest
possible learning experience. All hospitals are within 20
minutes of each other, and there are no away rotations. We
offer comprehensive training in general surgery, with sufficient
exposure to the subspecialties to meet the requirements of
the American Board of Surgery and the Residency Review Committee.
All its graduates are eligible for Board Certification. Research
opportunities are also available for residents. Because of
the academic requirements, residents are not permitted to
moonlight.
PROGRAM INFORMATION
The State University of New York at Buffalo Integrated Surgical
Residency Program provides an accredited five-year program
in surgery that utilizes six hospitals. The State University
of New York at Buffalo is the sponsoring agency for all graduate
training programs at the university and its affiliated hospitals.
The program includes nine categorical residents at each level
of training. It also includes preliminary experiences for
orthopedic, urology, neurosurgery and oral-maxillofacial surgery
residents
Reasons that make our residency program attractive:
- Each graduate averages 800-1000 cases over the five year
residency program.
- Experience in working in a variety of hospital management
styles and strict adherence to work hours regulations
- The Resident Leadership Group, elected representatives
of each year group, form an intergal part of the management
of the program
- Successful performance on the ABS exams
- Successful professional placements in fellowships and
practice opportunities
The training program has five levels of responsibility from
the entry level in the first year to the chief resident level
in the fifth year. At each level of training the Department
of Surgery has established a series of professional and academic
standards with specific goals for each clinical experience.
The professional standards include: promptness
in response to all pages and inquiries, clarity of communication,
appropriateness of dress and demeanor, cooperation in the
health care mission, and participation in general professional
activities.
The academic standards include: participation
in all academic encounters, attendance at Surgical Grand Rounds,
and the achievement and yearly maintenance of acceptable performance
in the American Board of Surgery’s Inservice Training
Examination. The curriculum is designed to meet the competency
standards set by the ACGME.
The clinical standards include: participation
in surgical procedures under the supervision of the faculty
and participation in the pre-hospital, perioperative and postoperative
care of the patient.
