Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship

The University at Buffalo Sports Medicine Fellowship is a one-year ACGME-accredited program (the only accredited program in New York State) sponsored by the University at Buffalo Department of Family Medicine and University Sports Medicine, a division of the Department of Orthopaedics. Each year, two fellows will be accepted into the program. The fellowship welcomes applicants with backgrounds in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics. This program is designed to provide comprehensive experience that will enable the fellow to apply primary care medical training to the assessment, treatment and management of sports injuries and musculoskeletal medicine. It involves active participation in providing coverage for athletes at various levels of competition, as well as preparation for obtaining a Certification of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in sports medicine.

In addition to the primary focus of learning musculoskeletal medicine skills, fellows also focus on the systemic and general medical concerns of athletes, such as exercise-induced asthma, nutritional guidance, and prevention and rehabilitation of athletic injuries via appropriate training and rehabilitation therapy methods.

Fellows in this program will work with faculty at University Sports Medicine and the Division I athletic teams at the University at Buffalo, and will follow a panel of continuity patients in their primary care specialty.
