Research

University-Affiliated Facilities

Opportunities for clinical research and instruction are ongoing at the following affiliated hospitals and health care systems. These affiliations provide a much larger scope of clinical training than would a sole university-based hospital.

Kaleida Health

Kaleida brings together the four major Western New York Health Systems by combining the facilities, services, resources, and talented physicians and staff of the Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo, Buffalo General Health System, DeGraff Memorial Hospital, and the Millard Fillmore Health System. Full-time university faculty maintain offices and laboratories at Buffalo General Hospital, Children's Hospital of Buffalo and Millard Fillmore Hospitals.

ECMC

The Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) is an ultramodern and highly automated 490-bed facility which offers 150 beds for the medical house staff teaching program. Of particular interest are state-of-the-art coronary and intensive care units. The latest computerized monitoring devices are used to follow these acutely ill patients. All medical admissions to this hospital are managed by the house staff, either in the Coronary Care and Intensive Care Units or on the three general medical teaching wards. The Medical Center provides lifesaving services in centers such as the Burn Treatment Center, the Trauma Center, the Lead Poisoning Center, and an AIDS Center.

VAMC

The Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) is an integrated, university-affiliated Medical Center providing a full continuum of medical, surgical, mental health, and long-term-care services. The Buffalo division of the VA Western New York Healthcare System is a 167-bed center servicing a full range of inpatient and outpatient programs.

A wing of the VAMC is dedicated to basic science research, and houses a large number of full-time medical faculty members with active research programs in endocrinology, immunology, infectious disease, clinical oncology, protein chemistry, renal disease, rheumatology, and gerontology.

RPCI

The Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) was founded in 1898 by Dr. Roswell Park and is the oldest comprehensive cancer center in the world. RPCI provides patients with a full range of oncology diagnostic and treatment services, including access to therapies not available elsewhere in the region. Specialized treatments and services include: blood and marrow transplantation, photodynamic therapy, a pediatric follow-up clinic for adolescents and young adults successfully treated for childhood cancer, a Regional Center for Maxillofacial Prosthetics (one of 12 in the country) providing care to both cancer and trauma patients, an adolescent unit devoted to the special needs of the teenage cancer patient, and new therapeutic regimens based on the most recent advances in biochemical pharmacology, immunology and biological response modifiers.

Catholic Health System

The Catholic Health System of Buffalo includes the following hospitals: Our Lady of Victory, St. Joseph, Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, Mount St. Mary's, United Memorial Medical Center, Kenmore Mercy, and Sisters of Charity. The later two have residency training opportunities.
