# Select one course from a list of focus area courses in the Department’s graduate manual.

Qualifying process:

The student must pass the Department’s qualifying exam in Bioengineering. Two courses, MAE 578 Cardiovascular Biomechanics and MAE 514 Evaluation of Biomaterials, provide the necessary background for this exam. The qualifying exam will be taken at the end of the first year of study in the PhD program.

In addition, an applied mathematics course (MAE 507 Engineering Analysis) and a restricted elective course are required as part of the qualifying process. These two courses would also be completed during the first year.

A dissertation research proposal presentation must be completed before the end of the second year in the program.
