MSTP Medical Scientist Training Prorgram

The translational scientist is this nation’s greatest hope for advancing human health and developing basic research into real therapies. The University at Buffalo Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) is committed to advancing the interests and training of the medical scientist. The MSTP is your portal to learning the clinical and basic science approaches and techniques that define translational medicine.

The MSTP combines a traditional medical curriculum with the Ph.D. program. However, we endeavor to avoid the conception of a split program – an MSTP scientist needs to incorporate clinical and basic science talents throughout his or her career – and this mindset begins during the MSTP training. During the M.D. 1st and 2nd year curriculum, MSTP students participate in laboratory research and MSTP research seminars. Likewise, during the Ph.D. years, the MSTP students are encouraged to engage in clinical activities as time allows. The program is small enough (about 25-30 students) to encourage close camaraderie among our students, and to ensure that each student gets individual guidance and attention and has a choice of thesis mentors.

We hope as you read the sections of this website that you will come away with an appreciation for the quality and dedication that personifies the University at Buffalo MSTP, the dynamic personality and intellect of our students, and for the beauty and quality of life in Buffalo and Western New York.
