Our Students

Since the Interdisciplinary Program was started in Fall, 1998 close to 250 students have matriculated into the departmental programs.  They come from many areas throughout the United States, including Georgia, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, Connecticut, Michigan, Minnesota and New York State, as well as international students from Europe, South America, the Middle and Far East and Canada. Our classes are diverse and include students from underrepresented groups.

Job opportunities for Ph.D. graduates exist in many facets of the academic, pharmaceutical, environmental, molecular biology or technology industries.  Career Day and various workshops are held to assist students in exploring the options available. 

Career guidance is provided through faculty mentors, departmental offices and the office of Research and Biomedical Education. Our graduates have gone on onto careers in industry, academic and government as well as other various professional career paths, including some non-traditional areas: Policy, Advocacy, and Regulatory Affairs, Business and Law, Technology Transfer, Science and Technical Writing, Editing and Publishing, Science Education, Medical Illustration and Imaging.

Following postdoctoral studies, graduates have been appointed to academic positions at various universities including Wayne State University, University of Illinois, Johns Hopkins University, Boston University, University of Massachusetts, Penn State University, the University of Pittsburgh, Purdue University, Washington and Lee University, San Francisco State University and Cheng Kung University Medical College, Taiwan and Ewha Institute of Neuroscience, Seoul, Korea.

A recent graduate of the Pharmacology Ph.D. program was recently appointed as Pharmacology/Medical Reviewer at the Food and Drug Administration, Division of Reproductive Drugs, while continuing to conduct neuropharmacological studies on serotonin at the National Institute of Mental Health. Others hold positions at NIH, NIDA and FDA.

Many Graduate hold high level research positions in industry and include Aventis, Pfizer, Glaxo, Merck, Colgate-Palmolive Co, Britol-Myers Squibb and Wyeth Ayerst.
