General Psychiatry Residency
Residency training is perhaps the most challenging and exciting time in a physician's life. Residents must learn how to enhance their communication skills so that they can effectively talk to patients, families, and other health care professionals. They must master a tremendous amount of knowledge, and continue to seek out learning experiences while adapting to rapid changes in technology. In addition, they need to learn to negotiate with other partners in the health care system in a professional and ethical manner. This is a time for an enormous shift in learning when the student becomes the teacher. At the University at Buffalo Department of Psychiatry, we understand the role that residency training plays in shaping our future doctors, and we offer outstanding training in clinical care, education, research and leadership skills.
We have a wealth of clinical programs in a variety of treatment settings; our experienced and dedicated faculty provides excellent supervision to residents, giving them the opportunity to evaluate and treat patients from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Residents participate in an integrated program that includes clinical experience, supervision, didactics and research. The program strives to help residents identify their individual interests and strengths, and to provide them the opportunities and support to excel in these areas. The Program offers two Tracks which are designed to encourage and enhance academic development during residency training. The Medical Educator Track focuses on clinical and didactic teaching skills and educational research. The Research Track enhances the resident's knowledge, skills and experience regarding psychiatric research. Both Tracks provide residents with protected time and mentorship to assist and support the residents on their path to an Academic or Research oriented career.
The Department offers an ACGME accredited two-year program in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and an ACGME accredited one-year program in Geriatric Psychiatry. Candidates may apply for admission to the popular Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Track, which integrates training and experiences in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry throughout the course of the general residency.
Residents are integral members of the department, and play an important role in shaping its educational goals and policies. We encourage them to take initiative and explore their areas of interest to enhance their own professional careers, as well as the field of psychiatry. Our goal is to train residents in a supportive and clinically diverse setting which is dedicated to academic excellence, so that they become competent, compassionate, and scientifically informed psychiatrists who are leaders in the field.
