Current research utilizing these facilities include a double-blind study of pharmaceutical interventions for patients with Bipolar I disorder, efficacy and pharmacokinetics of antipsychotic medications in elderly patients, safety and efficacy for medications for acute mania, safety and tolerability of treatments for Dementia of the Alzheimer's Type, and studies of pharmacological interventions with adolescents with schizophrenia and Bipolar disorder. In addition, faculty are pursuing research interests in biopsychosocial factors in chronic disease, hormonal modulation of brain and behavior, hormone related changes in mood and behavior in women interventions for children with ADHD, developmental studies of offspring of substance abusers, psychosocial studies of the development of alcohol problems among married couples, and the integration of bioinformatics and clinical information.
The clinical services of the department and our collaborations with other clinical facilities support the many research efforts of the department. Department faculty provide clinical services in both inpatient and outpatients settings in affiliated institutions, including the Erie County Medical Center, and the Kaleida Health System, including the Children's Hospital of Buffalo. Faculty also provide services at the Veterans WNY Healthcare System, the Buffalo Psychiatric Center, and the Children's Psychiatric Center. We maintain excellent relationships with psychiatrists in the community and have established a practice network to further clinical and research missions of the department.
