The Veterans WNY Healthcare System is composed of two campuses (Buffalo and Batavia) and six community-based outpatient clinics. It comprises emergency, inpatient and outpatient care. Because of its special medical programs and tertiary care capacities, it operates as the key referral hospital for other VA medical centers within a wide geographic area that includes Western and Central New York and Western Pennsylvania.
The inpatient psychiatry unit is devoted to the treatment of acute general psychiatric, geriatric, and chemically dependent patients. There is also a substance abuse residential unit. The inpatient unit, outpatient Mental Health Clinic and the Primary Care Clinics are sites for residents' clinical rotations. In addition, there is an expanding array of ambulatory services including the Post Traumatic Stress Disorders Clinical Team (PCT), the Mental Health Intensive Case Management (MHICM) Program, the Consultation-Liaison Service, the Health Care for Homeless Veterans (HCHV) Program and the Substance Abuse Treatment Services Program. Telepsychiatry is used to provide treatment to the community-based outpatient clinics. These services offer elective training for residents.
Residents spend a portion of their inpatient psychiatry rotation at VAMC. Some residents spend 4-8 hours/week at VAMC during their Adult Outpatient Rotation. Residents may also return to this site for elective rotations. Treatment approaches include patient and family education, individual, group and family psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, other somatic treatments, and the use of a therapeutic community.
