Erie County Medical Center Corporation

Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC) is a general public hospital which is a major teaching hospital for the State University of New York at Buffalo and the primary clinical and administrative site of our program.  ECMCC has been designated as the Regional AIDS Center and Regional Trauma Center, and has the only regional spinal cord injury unit.  Specialty programs include chemical dependency, trauma, burn, mental health, spinal cord, head trauma, cardiac catheterization, orthopedics, and renal.

The inpatient psychiatric service at ECMCC includes beds devoted to general adult psychiatry, adolescent psychiatry, geropsychiatry, and forensic psychiatry.  There are 5 adult Extended Observation Beds (EOB) and 1 EOB for children as part of the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP).  An active Consultation-Liaison (C-L) Service and the Adult, Child and Family Outpatient Clinic are also used for residency training.

The Psychiatry Department at ECMCC houses the only designated CPEP for assessment and treatment of persons in emotional crisis in Western New York.  The CPEP is a unique outreach service that provides 24-hour emergency mental health treatment in either the emergency room or home of persons requiring acute psychiatric care.

Residents spend a portion of their inpatient psychiatry rotation at ECMCC and are located there for their C-L, Emergency Psychiatry, Child Psychiatry, and Addiction Psychiatry rotations. Some residents spend 4-8 hours/week at ECMCC during their Adult Outpatient Rotation.  In addition, all seminars, journal clubs and some conferences are conducted at this site.  Residents may also return to this site for various elective rotations.
