Mission
Statement
The Department of
Psychiatry at the
State University
of New York at Buffalo
has three core missions:
First and foremost,
to provide cutting
edge clinical care
to the diverse populations
of patients with
complicated psychiatric
and with co-morbid
medical illnesses.
We plan to extend
our clinical activities
to include consultations
about clinical challenges
to an even broader
range of clinicians
and patients. As
an academic department,
we should be accessible
to patients from
a variety of backgrounds.
We will continue
to be a local resource
for patients with
the most complex
illnesses and for
the clinicians treating
them.
We will also be responsible
for providing outstanding
educational opportunities
to students, residents
and practitioners
in a variety of specialties.
As a result of the
dedication of our
faculty to teaching,
more students enter
psychiatry from our
program than from
most medical schools
in the United States.
We also plan to add
geriatric psychiatry
to our excellent
residency postgraduate
fellowships. Within
the next year, we
plan to expand our
teaching to include
a national conference
and key regional
postgraduate courses.
In an era of rapid
change in health
care funding, it
will be crucial to
diversify our funding
base to include multiple
sources of clinical
revenue and new directions
for research support.
Thus, we are charged
with conducting seminal
clinical research
while maintaining
stable sources of
financial support
for all of our activities.
Strengthening our
research mission
will further enhance
our position as a
state-of-the-art
source of knowledge
and clinical care.
In the next few years,
we will be expanding
our research in substance
abuse, psychobiology,
child psychiatry,
psychopharmacology,
schizophrenia and
PTSD. We will add
new research initiatives
in mood disorders,
telemedicine, the
interface between
psychiatry and other
medical specialties,
and clinical outcomes.
The Department's clinical
alliances with hospitals
and health care organizations
are being expanded
to include better
organization of clinical
services at diverse
sites, renewed relationships
with old friends,
and increased emphasis
on integrating academic,
clinical and teaching
initiatives. We look
forward to an era
of expansion of all
of these efforts.
