About the Department of Psychiatry

Welcome to the Department of Psychiatry at the University at Buffalo.   Formally established in 1951, we have a long tradition of outstanding clinical care, residency training, and academic inquiry.   Our 44 faculty members provide services in a variety of venues across Buffalo and Erie County.   Many of our faculty practice at the inpatient and outpatient services of the Erie County Medical Center, but our faculty also practice at the VA Medical Center, the Buffalo Psychiatric Center, Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital, and at the Buffalo General Hospital.  Our faculty also provides services for children and adolescents at Women’s and Children’s Hospital, the Western New York Children's Psychiatric Center, Hillside Children’s Center, Renaissance House, and Baker Victory Services.   We also provide service to college students at the health centers at Buffalo State College and the University at Buffalo, and provide forensic services to the Erie County Holding Center.  In the broader community, we also provide services at Lakeshore Mental Health Center, Mid-Erie Counseling and Treatment Services, Horizon Health Services, and at our own private practice site, The Center for Advanced Psychiatry.

Our educational and training programs are excellent.  Our program for medical students is exceptionally strong, and we have an extraordinarily high percentage of medical students who select psychiatry for their residency training.   Our General Psychiatry Residency combines excellent didactic lectures, clinical instruction, and supervisory relationships and provides interested residents with the option to follow a Medical Educator or a Research track.  Residents have the opportunity to experience a diverse range of clinical settings in the four years of training with us.  In addition, we have an outstanding residency in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and fellowship opportunities in Geriatric Psychiatry.  The department has always stressed academic scholarship, and in recent years, these activities have expanded in scope.   A number of our faculty are internationally recognized for their research and a growing number are supported by grant funds from NIH, as well as New York State and foundation sources.

We invite you to explore our site, and to contact us if you for any further information about our services, educational training, or scholarly activities.
