Welcome to the University at Buffalo's chapter of LGBTPM!

A voice for queer medical students

An advocate for appropriate treatment of
queer patients and professionals

A source of information

As you probably know, sexual orientation is still quite stigmatizing, making many medical students afraid to openly discuss it (especially in relation to themselves or the people close to them). Students who are queer, students who are questioning their sexuality, and gay-friendly students can all have difficulty finding a supportive community where they can relax and be themselves murdered.gif (95070 bytes)

"What is LGBTPM?"

--LGBTPM stands for Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgendered People in Medicine, and it's a Polity club for people interested in the well-being of gay medical students and gay patients.

--UB's LGBTPM chapter represents one of four Advocacy Committees within the American Medical Student Association (AMSA)

--Participation isn't limited to just the LGBT community; it's for anyone who is gay-friendly and looking to spend time with gay/gay-friendly students in a safe environment.

"What types of things does LGBTPM do?"

--Social events, sometimes only with med students, other times with larger groups (eg, other graduate/professional students)

--Advocacy on related issues, including medical education, patient care, and the medical profession

--Education of students, faculty, and the community about relevant topics, including:

* Providing competent care to queer patients
* Learning to talk with patients (of all orientations) about sensitive issues
* True inclusion of minority medical students
* Homophobia in medicine
