Frequently Asked Questions

Is there any advantage to waiting to buy my PDA? Will you be recommending a later device with better features?

Like most technology driven devices, we fully expect PDAs to evolve to include better features. Our prediction is that PDAs purchased this year will continue to be appropriate for our environment for two years.

Is there any disadvantage to having a non-Palm manufactured PDA?
The main disadvantage of having a Pocket PC or a PDA not manufactured by Palm is that OMC won’t be able to fully support it. Obviously there are other specifics where a device could be lacking, i.e. memory, color, expandability and weight and size. Your PDA will be suitable provided it meets the minimum specifications.

I have a Palm PDA already. Do I have to purchase one of this year’s newly recommended devices?

If you already have a PDA that meets the minimum specifications, you are not required to purchase one of the newly recommended devices. OMC will continue to support these devices. In making new device recommendations we want to give students a greater selection to choose from. All recommended PDAs will be fully supported by the OMC PDA support group.

I'm on the 1st year "wait list" at UB or I'm not sure if I'm coming to UB in the fall. Do I still need to buy a PDA?

Your decision. The more time you have to play with your device this summer, the better prepared you will be to use it once you arrive at school.

Is there Financial Aid for students to purchase their PDA?

The Office of Medical Education (OME) has determined that the existing Financial Aid package available to eligible Medical Students is sufficient to cover costs for books, a PDA and the required software. If a student can demonstrate that their Financial Aid package is not sufficient to cover these costs, they should contact the OME to voice their concern.

Will the Office of Medical Computing (OMC) help me configure my PDA even if I didn't buy it from UB Micro?

Yes, there will be OMC staff able to assist you with configuring your Palm OS based PDA in the fall. Your PDA must meet these minimum requirements in order for you to receive support:

  • Palm OS compatible device: i.e. Palm, Handspring, or Sony
  • Min. of 12MB and memory expandable (applications required by the school will not exceed 8MB but the assumption will be made that 8MB is available for the OS and your Medical School applications)
  • IR capable and IR enabled
  • Palm OS Version 4.1 or higher
