Program ID #3003521224

The Department of Pathology participates in the National Residency Matching Program for first year positions. Each applicant must register with the NRMP before his/her application will be considered for a first year position. The program abides by all of the regulations of the NRMP. Openings for years other than the first year and those that may occur during the academic year will be filled outside the match.

Applicants to the residency-training program in pathology must apply via ERAS. Applications should be submitted as early as possible, preferably by November 1st. Late applications (after December 1st) may not receive appropriate review.

Applications are evaluated on a number of criteria. Emphasis is placed on the applicant´s cognitive abilities, communication skills, clinical skills, knowledge and record of achievement. In addition, the applicant´s ability, as judged by faculty members during a personal interview, to adapt to the program, to work as a member of a team composed of faculty, resident colleagues, laboratory technicians and support staff, and to develop effective patient/physician relationships are equally important criteria. The following process has been designed to facilitate the search for the "right match":

  1. Each application is screened by the Selection Committee, which is composed of the Program Director and designated faculty. The Selection Committee evaluates each applicant on the basis of the following criteria:
    1. Quality of undergraduate medical education
    2. Medical school grades, achievements, honors, and Dean´s Letter of Recommendation
    3. Experience in pathology and research
    4. Quality of the personal statement, indicating effective written communication skills, as well as a commitment to a career in pathology
    5. Letters of recommendation (3), should indicate the applicant´s ability to sustain the rigors of a training program and to interact effectively with others. Ideally, at least one letter should be from a U.S. source.
    6. Year of graduation from medical school (< 10 years out of medical school preferred)
    7. USMLE Scores: > 80 on both parts one, two and three on the first attempt preferred. If more than 5 years out of medical school, successful completion of STEP 3 expected.
    8. J-1 visa sponsorship preferred. H-1b visas may be available on a limited basis, but we are unable to guarantee availability.

  2. Based on the Selection Committee´s recommendation, applicants are selected to pursue their application with a personal interview.

  3. Interviews are scheduled for a full day, and applicants are offered dates from which to choose in the months of November, December or January. Special accommodations may be made for applicants unable to interview on one of the scheduled dates. Interviewing Faculty members are provided with complete copies of the applicants´ files, so that they may review the records before the interview date.

During the course of the day, applicants first meet as a group with the Program Director who gives an overview of the program. This is followed by interviews with the faculty, lunch with the residents and tour of the department´s facilities.

  4. After all qualified applicants have been interviewed and the initial ranking list is compiled, select faculty and residents meet to discuss the final ranking list. The final ranking is then submitted to the NRMP.
