Residency Program
Department of Orthopaedics

The PGY-3 year consists of three months at University Sports Medicine, two three-month rotations at the Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, and three months of oncology at the Buffalo General Hospital. The sports medicine rotation is both an operative and non-operative experience. Patients are seen at University Sports Medicine where they are diagnosed, evaluated, and managed.
Sports Medicine has its own physical therapy unit; physical therapists and athletic trainers assist in managing the sports injury, and residents participate in evaluation and treatment. Residents will also have an opportunity to work with the attending physicians at community sporting events in both college and professional settings. Surgical procedures in this rotation are performed at both the Erie County Medical Center and an outpatient surgery center.
Six months of the third year are spent at the Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, where residents participate in the management of pediatric orthopaedic problems through emergency room cases and orthopaedic clinics, as well as private patients seen by the full-time staff there. Specialty clinics include spina bifida, cerebal palsy, and a children’s amputee and limb deficiency clinic.
A three month tumor rotation with Dr. Brian McGrath and Dr. Eugene Mindell is performed at Buffalo General Hospital. During this rotation the resident is involved in evaluating and managing orthopaedic oncology cases with Dr. McGrath. Pre-operative evaluations, surgical procedures, and post-operative evaluations are performed. Residents will also work at the Bone Lab, which has been developed over the past three decades by Dr. Eugene Mindell, Professor Emeritus and former Chairman of the Department.
