The Department of Orthopaedics holds its teaching conferences on Thursday morning for all residents, attendings, and the Western New York orthopaedic community. Conferences begin with interesting case discussions presented by the residents, with discussion by the attending surgeons. Upon completion of the case presentations, Grand Rounds are presented by two residents and an attending physician. Topics for the didactic series are covered over a two-year period as developed by the department’s curriculum committee. This allows residents an opportunity to be exposed to each topic twice during their residency..
The final hour of conference is devoted to Basic Science topics. The text used for basic science reading is the Orthopaedic Basic Science Biology and Biomechanics of the Musculoskeletal System, edited by Joseph Buckwalter and published by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. This book will be covered in its entirety over a two year period. This alternates with a review session for the OITE subject pertinent to the week’s Grand Rounds topic.
From October to May, an anatomy lab is held on the first Thursday of each month. At 7:00 am we begin with an anatomy quiz, followed by a didactic lecture led by a senior resident and an attending orthopaedic surgeon. Following the presentation, surgical approaches are performed by the presenting resident and chiefs with attending supervision. The final hour alternates between cadaveric arthroscopy sessions in the arthroscopy lab, and physical examination sessions.
These conferences are held from September through June. For the first two months of the academic year (July and August), Thursday conference concentrates on fracture management. There are weekly sessions devoted to fractures and dislocations of a specific body region. There is also one Saturday conference during the summer for motor skills; this includes practical casting and splinting techniques. There are several evening saw bone labs during the summer aimed at working on techniques for common fracture management, including IM rodding and plate & screw fixation.
Each hospital site has weekly conferences in which pre-operative and post-operative cases are discussed. A fracture board conference is held three to four days a week for thirty minutes per session to review consults from the previous day.
A quarterly Tumor Unknown oncology conference is presented at Buffalo General Hospital by the resident on the tumor rotation. Individual case presentations are available for review on our website for one week prior to the conference.
Journal Club is held the first Tuesday of each month. Journal articles are reviewed and discussed for their design, hypothesis, conclusion, and clinical value by the residents with supervision by an attending physician. There is also an annual education allowance available to all residents for conferences and books. Each resident may attend one educational conference per calender year.
