| The Bone Laboratory |
| The Bone Laboratory is located at Buffalo General Hospital and was developed by Dr. Eugene Mindell,
Professor Emeritus and former Department Chairman. It is currently supervised by Dr. Brian
McGrath. The Bone Lab offers residents an opportunity to gain experience with histology slides, and
also to view current and past oncology case studies with Dr. Lucia Balos,
an attending Pathologist with the University at Buffalo. |
| The Bone Lab is equipped with a digital, computerized Orthopaedic Oncology Archive (3000
patient case histories) and a fully
functional Orthopaedic Oncology Laboratory. Available equipment includes an AO Spencer
820 microtome for smaller specimens, and a Reichert-Jung Sliding microtome for larger specimens.
A polycut E, X-ray machine, Bandsaw, Shannon Autosharp 5, various lab equipment, and an Olympus
Vanox-S camera - microscopic 35 mm camera are also available. |
| Support personnel at the Bone Laboratory include a Bone Lab Technician, who is available
as lab support to assist in the process of creating histology slides. Mary Bayers-Thering, MS, MBA, is a
Research Associate; she is available to assist in data collection and preparation for clinical studies. |
| As an additional resource for residents, Dr. Mindell has begun a web archive on the Images of Musculoskeletal Oncology, with an emphasis on diagnostic images; the site uses patient photographs, short history and physical examination, routine radiographs, CT, MRI, Bone Scan, OR photos, gross examination (usually in the Bone Lab), photomicrographs (both low and high power), and large histology sections when available. Treatment and long term follow up may also be included. |
