Images of Musculoskeletal Oncology

The intention of this web site is to improve the ability of our residents, medical students, and attending physicians in the early diagnosis and proper treatment of patients with musculoskeletal neoplasms or conditions that simulate them.
These lesions are relatively uncommon, and consequently proper diagnosis is often missed or delayed. These delays may allow time for malignant lesions to metastasize and prevent cure, and make benign lesions more difficult to treat simply.
The emphasis is on images; patient photographs, short history and physical examination, routine radiographs, CT, MRI, bone scan, OR photos, gross examination, low and high power photomicrographs, and large histology sections when available. Treatment and long term follow up may also be included.
The diagnosis of benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumors was developed by William F. Enneking, M.D., and is accepted by the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society. The benign lesions are classified and staged as:
1. Latent
2. Active
3. Aggressive
The malignant bone and soft tissue sarcomas are staged as to whether the histosections demonstrate low or high grade malignancy, and whether lesions have extended beyond the compartment in which they originate. Thus these lesions are graded:IA, IB, IIA, IIB and III if metastatic spread has occurred. This system can predict biologic behavior of each lesion, and can also direct proper treatment.
The cases included are mainly those from the Bone Pathology Laboratory and State University of New York at Buffalo Department of Orthopaedics, intending to make this collection as complete as possible, with proper recognition being provided.
In addition, entities will be included that are not neoplastic, but whose pathological findings are very useful in demonstrating the nature of the musculoskeletal disease, and will aid in deciding on the most effective treatment.
