Ophthalmic Pathology
Advisor: Dr Gonzalez-Fernandez
Location: Buffalo General Hospital
Ophthalmic pathology represents a cross-section of pathology
in that it includes topics in dermatopathology (eye lids),
neuropathology (optic nerve, retina), soft tissue (orbital
lesions), and other issues unique to the eye (conjuctiva,
cornea, lens and globe). The goal of the rotation is to
expose the resident to the normal and pathological anatomy
and histopathology of the eye and structures related to
it. Emphasis is placed on correlating pathology to clinical
states. Resident work directly with Dr Gonzalez-Fernandez
to gross in surgical and autopsy specimens of the eye and
ocular adnexa, and to sign out all histological cases. Opportunities
for the preparation of case report publication abound.
