Erie County Medical Center

The Erie County Medical Center
is the region’s Level I Trauma Center, and is a major
teaching hospital for the State University of New York at
Buffalo. Founded in 1919 and modernized in the late 1970’s
the hospital has approximately 700 beds and multiple off-site
clinics. State-of-the-art diagnostic facilities include a
high-speed spiral CT-scanner and a 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner.
E.C.M.C. is recognized as a regional
health care leader in anterior segment surgery, cornea &
external disease, glaucoma, diseases of the retina, and low
vision. Because of its designation as the region’s only
Level I Trauma Center, the ophthalmology department treats
some of the most severely injured patients in New York State.
Complex reconstructive surgery is routinely performed by members
of the department. The operating room has the most advanced
microsurgical equipment for both anterior segment and posterior
segment surgery. E.C.M.C. is
one of the three primary clinical teaching sites within the
Department of Ophthalmology. Over 8,000 new patients are examined
at the eye clinic each year. The clinic is equipped with the
latest digital imaging equipment for diagnostic retinal imaging.
Computerized corneal topography, A and B-scan ultra-sonography,
and a full complement of electrophysiologic testing offer
the most advanced non-invasive diagnostic services available
in the region. Tunable dye, diode, and YAG lasers allow treatment
of advanced retinal disorders, glaucoma, and anterior segment
diseases. A minor surgical suite within the clinic allows
the surgical treatment of minor ophthalmic disorders.
The Veterans Administration Medical
Center

As the largest VA medical center in
upstate New York, the VAMC is the main tertiary referral site
for eight counties in Western New York and Northern Pennsylvania.
The ambulatory eye center has been recently expanded and renovated.
The operating room facilities have state-of-the-art equipment
for anterior and posterior segment surgery. A full complement
of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment is available in the
clinic including: diagnostic retinal imaging, A and B-scan
ultrasonography, argon/krypton and YAG lasers. The VAMC is
located directly across the street from SUNY at Buffalo’s
Medical School.
Women’s’ and Children’s
Hospital

Rated as one the top twenty Children’s
Hospitals in North America, this is where the major portion
of the resident’s pediatric experience takes place.
The Department of. Ophthalmology is the major referral site
in Western New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania for infants,
children, and adolescents with eye diseases. More than 400
surgical cases are performed each year. While the majority
of these surgical cases involve the correction of strabismus,
there is bread exposure to other surgical procedures including:
congenital cataracts, pediatric glaucoma, correction of congenital
ptosis, and pediatric tumors.
