Program Rationale and Goals: To increase minority students' sense of satisfaction and support.

  • Activities: Group mentoring and individualized mentoring initiatives.
  • Matching method: When possible, mentees and mentors are matched by program.

Program Rationale and Goals: To provide additional support for students apart from OME.  The hope is that if problems arise they might be recognized and addressed early.

  • Activities: Particular to each mentor.  It is expected that the mentor will contact the student by phone or in person at least once a semester.
  • Matching method: random- an effort is made to match female physicians with female medical students.

  • Mentoring Type: Student-to-Student

Program Rationale and Goals: Provide peer support to incoming students to assist with the transition to medical school.  Big sibs are a resource to answer any question, offer support and be a friend as needed.

  • Activities: Structured introduction session during orientation in which the big sib and little sib take a campus tour and become acquainted.  Following orientation, any contact between matched individuals is independent of any structured activities.  
  • Matching method: Essentially a random assignment.  If a second year student knows an incoming student, s/he can request the person as a "little sib."__________________________________________________________________________________

Program Rationale and Goals: Provide career information for students considering a specialty in surgery.  Give students the opportunity to speak with upperclassmen who have researched surgery as a career choice and to provide guidance.

Program Goals: When minority students experience academic difficulty, they are initially referred to their faculty, then course coordinator.  After that point, they are assigned by the Assistant Dean to a tutor who has been recommended by that academic department.
