The University at Buffalo, SUNY, School of Medicine and Biomedical
Sciences strives to select students who possess the intelligence,
integrity and personal and emotional characteristics that are considered
necessary to become excellent and effective physicians. Students admitted
to a medical school should have the intellectual and physical skills
to gain the knowledge, behaviors and clinical abilities needed to
pursue any pathway of graduate medical education.
UB's goal is to prepare its graduates to enter and complete graduate
medical education, to qualify for licensure, to provide competent
medical care and to have the educational background necessary for
continued learning. The School's curriculum is designed to provide
a general medical professional education that permits students to
learn the fundamental principles of medicine, to acquire skills of
critical judgment based on education and experience and to develop
an ability to use principles and skills wisely in solving problems
of health and disease. Emphasis is placed on the student's ability
to learn through self-directed, independent study throughout their
professional lives. We provide a broad-based clinical education in
both ambulatory and hospital settings with a strong core curriculum
in primary care and an exposure to all the specialties.
The School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the State University
of New York at Buffalo admits 135 students to its First-Year Class.
Selection is based on scholastic achievement, aptitude, personal qualifications,
and evidence of motivation toward medicine. These are judged from
the college record, the Medical College Admission Test, letters of
reference and evaluation, and personal interview. The "Essential
Functions of the Medical School Curriculum" is provided to all
applicants. Students with a bachelor's degree from an accredited college
or university are preferred. In exceptional cases those with shorter
preparation will be considered. In selecting a field of undergraduate
concentration, the student should be strongly influenced by his/her
real interests. Medicine is a profession with many career opportunities,
and the exploration of almost any field in depth is encouraged.
Some preference is given to qualified residents of New York State.
Competitive out-of-state applicants are encouraged to apply. Students
presently matriculated in or having graduated from another professional
program (M.S., Ph.D., D.D.S., etc.) are eligible to apply to the First-Year
Class only. Students presently enrolled in an American or Canadian
or Foreign medical, or Osteopathic schools are ineligible to apply
to the First-Year Class but are eligible to apply to our Transfer
Program. All applicants must be United States citizens or permanent
residents of the United States and have had two full years or 60 credit
hours of higher education in the United States or Canada. Permanent
residents must submit a photocopy of both sides of their registration
card before any application processing commences.
