10 MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS OF MEDICAL SCHOOL ADMISSIONS
- Do you
accept applications from Foreign Nationals?
** All applicants must be US citizens, or permanent residents
of the United States with a green card. Canadian citizens who
are not permanent residents are ineligible to apply.
- I completed
the majority of my college coursework in a foreign country. Can
I apply to your Medical School?
** All candidates must complete 60 credit hours of higher education
in the US or Canada. This coursework must be finished prior to
applying to our Medical School.
- Do you
give preference to New York State residents?
** Some preference is given to qualified residents of NYS. Competitive
out of state applicants are encouraged to apply.
- What is
the average GPA of your entering students?
What is the average MCAT score?
** The average GPA is 3.60 with an MCAT total of 29.
- If I take
the MCAT exam more than once, which scores are evaluated?
** We will only consider the highest overall (total) MCAT score
received.
- Is it
better to take the April MCAT exam over the August one?
** Yes, it is better to take the April exam. Taking the test earlier
allows you to complete your application earlier in the season
- and earlier you submit your application, the better. If you
must take the August exam, make sure your supplemental application
material is received by our Office by mid-October.
- How long
are my MCAT scores good for?
** We only accept MCAT scores taken within the 3 year period before
applying.
- When do
you start interviewing and on what days?
** We start interviewing in September and continue through Feb.
Our interview days are Wednesdays. Interviews are by invitation
only. If you are not invited for an interview, that is equivalent
to a rejection.
- Why was
my application rejected?
** The level of competition for seats in our Class has been extremely
intense for the limited spaces available. In recent years, we
have received approximately 2,000 applications, interviewed 450-500
candidates, and have entered 135 new incoming students. Because
of this, we are forced to reject
many fine applicants each year. When a candidate is rejected,
the Committee simply considers others to have better overall qualifications
and credentials that merits acceptance.
- Do you
accept transfer students?
** Transfer applications are usually considered only into our
3rd Year Class. The number of 3rd year transfers is determined
by class attrition. If space is available, applications are only
considered if documented evidence of hardship exists for the student
to continue at the School that he/she is currently enrolled. Please
contact the Admissions Office for further information.
