Resident Schedules/Benefits/Leaves

Schedules

PGY-I

In the first year of residency, there is predominantly a night float system during all obstetrics rotations. During the holiday season, we switch to a call system so that residents can have time off. While doing special or outside rotations, a call-system is also employed.

PGY-II through PGY-IV

We use a call system, with 7 overnight calls in 4 weeks. On average, most residents get two full weekends off a month.

Work Hours

The program follows both the NYS 405 Work Hours Regulations as well as the ACGME Work Hours Rules.

Salaries & Benefits

For current salaries and benefits offered through the University at Buffalo, please visit the Graduate Medical Education (GME) website for the most up to date information.

Leaves/Vacations

Vacations

You are allowed 3 weeks (21 days) vacation per academic year. 4 weeks (28 Days) are given during leap years. These vacation weeks are scheduled prior to each academic year.

Typically, vacations are taken one week at a time, although 2 weeks in a row can sometimes be arranged. Unless absolutely impossible, most residents get the weekend off preceding their vacation week, so a vacation week is comprised of 2 weekends and a week.

Conference Time

Chief Residents are allowed up to 1 week (7 days) to attend out-of-town medical conferences.

Interview Time

Chief Residents are allowed up to 1 week (7 days) for fellowship/job interviews. Anytime needed above this is taken from the resident's vacation time.

Maternity/Paternity Leave

Residents will be granted up to six (6) weeks of maternity and up to two (2) weeks paternity leave. Maternity/Paternity leave will start on the date of delivery.

Please be advised that the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology stipulate that you may not have more than a total of 8 weeks of absence during your PGY-I, II and III years and no more than 6 weeks of absence during your chief year. This is inclusive of all forms of absence such as vacation, sick time, conferences/interviews and maternity/paternity leave. Your Conference and Interview week allotment may not be used for maternity/paternity leave.
