Degree Requirements

Ph.D.

• Required Courses:
  BMS* 501, 503, 505 or 506, 509/510, 511/512; choice of BCH** 507 or 508;and MIC 501, 511, 512, and 619/620
• Language Skill:
  none
• Examinations:
  qualifying exam covering the major subdivisions of microbiology and immunology and involving preparation and defense of a research proposal must be completed at least two semesters before degree is conferred; thesis/project/dissertation and oral defense required
• Retention Standards:
  minimum 3.0 GPA; students must earn grade of "B" or better to receive graduate credit for courses within the Department
• Residence Requirement:
  minimum two semesters of continuous full-time residence

*BMS courses are offered through the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences (IGPBS) and are required of all first year students. They include such topics as biochemistry and cell biology.

**BCH courses are offered through the Department of Biochemistry. 

M.A. 

• Required Courses:

• Suggested Electives:

• Examinations:
  following completion of coursework, the student is required to pass a comprehensive written exam covering all major areas of Microbiology (Parasitology, Virology, Bacteriology, and Immunology).
• Retention Standards:
  minimum of 3.0 GPA; students must earn a grade of "B" or better to receive graduate credit for courses within the Department.
