Buffalo
is a border city, and many Buffalonians share in the cultural advantages
of nearby Canada including metropolitan Toronto that is only 90 miles
from Buffalo and scenic Niagara Falls that is only 30 minutes away.
In winter months, skiing and other winter sports are popular at a number
of ski resorts located within an hour's drive from the university campus.
There are numerous lakes for fishing and boating. Most recreational
activities found in the northeastern United States are available in
the area. The city is home to a number of professional sport teams such
as the Buffalo Bills (NFL football),
the Buffalo Sabres (NHL hockey), the
Buffalo Bisons (AAA baseball affiliate
of the Cleveland Indians), the Buffalo Blizzard (NPSL indoor soccer),
the Buffalo Bandits (National
Lacrosse League), and the Buffalo
Destroyers (Arena Football League). In addition, there are many
opportunities for participating in intramural and extramural sports
at the University at Buffalo.
The University
at Buffalo is one of the cultural centers of the community. In addition,
the Albright-Knox Art
Gallery, Buffalo
Museum of Science, Kleinhans Music Hall, the Buffalo
Philharmonic Orchestra, the State University College at Buffalo,
and a wealth of local theater contribute greatly to the cultural life
of the community.
