Programs of Study

The Department offers programs leading to the B.S. (Special Major), M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. Emphasis is placed on the development of competence in the areas of bacteriology, immunology, parasitology, and virology.

Ph.D. Program (Students apply through the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences [IGPBS]

Financial Aid

All full-time Ph.D. students receive stipends and tuition scholarship awards, as well as health insurance benefits. Stipends are competitive with those currently offered by other institutions. Current stipend level is $21,000 per year. Graduate students who are awarded the University Presidential Fellowship receive supplements in addition to the standard stipend.

Student Outcomes

The majority of recent Ph.D. graduates continue their academic careers as postdoctoral fellows in well-respected laboratories including those of the National Institutes of Health, the Howard Hughes Medical Institutes, and major research universities throughout the United States. Graduates of the Department hold faculty positions in colleges and universities and research/administrative positions in industry throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. Other graduates of the Ph.D. program have entered professional schools, e.g., medicine, law, business, for specialized training.

M.A. Program (Students apply through the Interdisciplinary
Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences [Masters Program].

The Department offers a Master of Arts Degree program, in which the student takes a diverse selection of required and elective courses and undergoes a comprehensive qualifying examination.  There is no formal research component to the M.A. program in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology.

 

Financial Aid

There is no financial aid available for M.A. candidates.  Students are responsible for tuition and fees as well as living expenses.
