The Department of Microbiology was created in 1941 in the
School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and is responsible for instruction
in microbiology and immunology to medical, dental, graduate and
undergraduate students.
The Department offers several predoctoral and postdoctoral training
programs in a variety of research areas. These educational programs provide a solid
training background; predoctoral and postdoctoral programs are based on state-of-the-art research conducted in
the laboratories of the departmental faculty. Currently, there are 20
primary appointment faculty members and 24 secondary appointment faculty members with
research interests in bacteriology, immunology, parasitology, and virology.
Areas of research include gene expression, signal transduction, mucosal
immunology, tumorigenesis, and all aspects of bacterial, viral, and parasite
pathogenesis. The primary faculty members in this Department have successfully
obtained more than $4 million annually in extramural support for their
research.
