Student Awards

Ernest Witebsky Award for proficiency in Microbiology

Dr. Witebsky chaired the Microbiology Department from its inception until 1967 and was the first Director of the Center that now bears his name. The award consists of an inscribed plaque and monetary gift. It is made annually to a second year Microbiology and Immunology doctoral student obtaining the highest GPA in all MIC coursework.

Erwin Neter Award

A Heidelberg trained physician/bacteriologist, Dr. Neter came to Buffalo at about the same time as Ernest Witebsky. He was Professor of Pediatrics and Microbiology and worked on Enterobacteriaceae; the bacterium, Cedecea neteri, was named in honor of Dr. Neter. He trained several of our graduate students and after his death the Western New York American Society for Microbiology (WNYASM) created an annual monetary student award in his memory. This award is presented at the Spring Microbial Pathogenesis meeting [subject to change]. Graduate students who are members of the WNYASM compete and are judged for the best poster presentation.

Boris Albini Award

Dr. Albini came to UB in 1974 from the University of Vienna, and in 1976 he joined the faculty of the Department of Microbiology. Dr. Albini was an immunopathologist who trained many graduate students and M.D. postdoctoral fellows in this field. Following his death, the Department and the Buffalo Collegium of Immunology created an award in his memory that is presented to a graduate student for a poster presentation at the Fall immunology meeting [subject to change] sponsored by the Witebsky Center for Microbial Pathogenesis and Immunology. The award consists of a certificate and cash.

Eugene Gorzynski Travel Award

Dr. Gorzynski, a former student and faculty member of the Department of Microbiology, was a popular teacher and a respected researcher. The award is made annually to a graduate or medical student, in alternate years, to help support travel to present a research paper or poster at a national or international meeting. Next award will be presented in 2009 to a graduate student.

Murray W. Stinson Award for Excellence in Dissertation Research

Dr. Stinson joined the Department of Microbiology in 1969. He taught medical, graduate and undergraduate courses and trained many graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in bacteriology. He also served as Director of Graduate Studies. Following his death, the Department created an award in his memory that recognizes outstanding dissertation research by a graduate student in the Department along with a well-rounded and excellent academic record that includes publications and presentations related to the research. The award, which consists of a certificate and cash is presented at the annual SMBS Commencement.

Dean’s Award for Outstanding Dissertation Research

One graduating doctoral candidate per Department is nominated each year by the respective Department for this award based on an outstanding dissertation. The award is presented at the May Commencement.

Mark Diamond Research Award

The Mark Diamond Research Fund is a component of the Graduate Student Association that provides financial support for expenses directly related to the collection of information for thesis or dissertations. The maximum grant is $1,200 for Doctoral Research.
