Ph.D. Program

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology offers a doctoral program in Microbiology and Immunology.

Our students are admitted through the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences (IGPBS) where they spend their first academic year following the IGPBS curriculum.

According to the procedures of the IGPBS, students interested in Microbiology and Immunology must complete at least one laboratory rotation with a faculty member in the Department accepting students and once the faculty member and the student have agreed, the student will be enrolled in the Microbiology and Immunology Graduate Program for their doctoral studies.

The Microbiology and Immunology Graduate Program is directed by Dr. Anthony Campagnari.  For any questions regarding the program please contact Mrs. Betty Cummings (cumming@buffalo.edu), telephone (716-829-2176).

The majority of recent Ph.D. graduates continue their academic careers as postdoctoral fellows in well-respected laboratories including those of the National Institutes of Health, the Howard Hughes Medical Institutes, and major research universities throughout the United States. Graduates of the Department hold faculty positions in colleges and universities and research/administrative positions in industry throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. Other graduates of the Ph.D. program have entered professional schools, e.g., medicine, law, business, for specialized training.
