Admissions
Students interested in Microbiology and Immunology are admitted through the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences (IGPBS). Students are admitted in the Fall Semester and spend a year in the IGPBS program before they enter the Microbiology and Immunology Graduate Program run by the Department.
Admission Criteria
- Baccalaureate or equivalent, with thorough preparation in biology, chemistry, and physics
- Graduate Record Examination (General, required; Subject, recommended)
- International applicants must submit TOEFL (minimum score required)

Each applicant needs to submit the following:
- Completed on-line application form
- Application fee, $50 (non-refundable), U.S. funds. Checks and money orders should be made out to University at Buffalo. You can also make credit card payments
- All official undergraduate and graduate transcripts
- Letters of recommendation, three minimum
- Personal statement of interest
- Standardized test scores (GRE General, TOEFL*) *required for all international applications
Application Deadlines: Applicants are encouraged to apply by February 1 of the year they intend to enroll; January 1 for fellowships. Whenever possible, a personal interview is arranged by request of the IGPBS in the Spring.
There is no standard financial aid application form since qualified applicants are automatically considered for financial assistance (stipend and tuition scholarship).

Tuition and stipend
All full-time Ph.D. students receive stipends and full tuition scholarship awards, as well as health insurance benefits. Stipends are competitive with those currently offered by other institutions. Current stipend level is $24,000 per year. Graduate students who are awarded the University Presidential Fellowship receive supplements in addition to the standard stipend.
