What it is:

The Systemic Autoimmune Disease Research Center of Western New York (SADRCWNY) is a non-profit organization within SUNYat Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the Kaleida Health System dedicated to:

  1. Performing cutting-edge clinical and basic research to improve the understanding and treatment of autoimmune diseases
  2. Providing the most advanced forms of evaluation and treatment for patients
  3. Acting as a tertiary referral center for evaluation and management of patients with autoimmune diseases
  4. Serving as an informational resource for physicians and patients

Where it is located:

The main offices and research laboratories of SADRCWNY are located in the Multi-Laboratory Building of the Buffalo General Hospital of the Kaleida Health System. The major clinical centers of SADRCWNY are located within the Buffalo General Hospital, the Children's Hospital of Buffalo ( of Kaleida Health System) and the Erie County Medical Center.SADRCWNY collaborates clinically with all interested Rheumatologists, Immunologists and other physicians in Western New York. It collaborates scientifically with physicians and scientists from Western New York, other parts of the United States and various other parts of the world.

What diseases it encompasses:

SADRCWNY focuses it attention on Systemic Lupus Erytematosus (SLE). It has ongoing reaearch projects examining Hashimoto thyroiditis, Wegener granulomatosis and Microscopic Polyarteritis. It sees patients with all types of autoimmune diseases including dermatomyositis/polymyositis, scleroderma, primary anti-phospholipid antibody syndrome, juvenile arthritis and all forms of vasculitis.

Research Projects:

SLE:

  1. Database for all lupus patients in WNY
  2. Evaluation of central nervous system disease in SLE
  3. Determination of dysregulated genes in various forms of SLE
  4. Analysis of the role of IL-14 in SLE
  5. Evaluation of a protein expressed selectively in the sera of patients with SLE and systemic vasculitis
  6. Use of CTLA-4 Ig in the treatment of lupus nephritis

Hashimoto Thyroiditis:

  1. Evaluation of the relationship between Hashimoto thyroiditis and chronic urticaria
  2. Determination of optimal treatment of chronic urticaria associated with Hashimoto thyroiditis
  3. Evaluation of a possible relationship between TCDD and Hashimoto thyroiditis (proposed)

Wegener Granulomatosis and Microscopic Polyarteritis:

  1. Determination of the nature of the inflammation in Wegener granulomatosis (WG) and Microscopic polyarteritis (MPA)
  2. Evaluation of the relationship among inflammatory cells in the kidney and other organs in WG and MPA
