Residency Program
Application
Thank you for your interest in the University at Buffalo Internal Medicine Program.
To follow is basic information about applying to our program:
- Our program is accepting all applications
via ERAS. We, therefore, will not be able to review any paper applications,
C.V.’s or other documentation received by mail or fax.
- We require 4 letters of recommendation:
one from your Medical School Dean and 3 others, preferably from clinical
faculty who know you well.
- Interviews will be scheduled from November
to January by invitation only. We interview on Tuesdays and Fridays.
- Deadline for applications is December
1st
- American students who have interviewed
and matched with us have come from both allopathic and osteopathic schools
of medicine. We have required American students to have taken and passed
Step 1 of either the USMLE or osteopathic national exams by the time of
their scheduled interview.
- At the time of interview, pending ECFMG
certification is satisfactory. However, all IMG applicants must be ECFMG
certified prior to ranking (February 1st).
- We accept J-1 and H-1B visa sponsorship.
Also for H-1B visa sponsorship, USMLE Step 3 results are
required by March 1st.
- We prefer applicants who have had observerships
in the U.S. or who have not been away from clinical medicine for more
than 3 years (or who have graduated from Medical School within the last
3 years).
- The majority of IMG applicants, who have
interviewed and matched with us, have had scores of 85 and above on USMLE
Step 1, and 85 and above on Step 2 (on the first attempt).
- Our program participates in the couple’s
match.
- The only Preliminary positions that we
offer are tied to advanced residency training programs at the University
of Buffalo (for example Anesthesiology, PM&R and Neurology). These
departments must initiate the interview process.
- The University at Buffalo offers fellowships
in all of the Internal Medicine subspecialties.
- Our program does not offer externships
or observerships.
- Our program is university-based and fully
accredited by the ACGME.
