General Information for Applicants

Thank you for your interest in the University at Buffalo Internal Medicine Program.
Below is a list of basic information about applying to our program:

1. Our program is accepting all applications via ERAS.  We, therefore, will not be able to review any paper applications, curriculum vitae or other documentation received by mail or fax.

2.   We require 4 letters of recommendation: one from your Medical School Dean and 3 others, preferably from clinical faculty who know you well.

3.   Interviews will be scheduled from November 5, 2001 to January 11, 2002 by invitation only.

4.   Deadline for applications is December 15, 2001.

5.   American students who have interviewed and matched with us have come from both allopathic and osteopathic schools of medicine.  We have required American students to have taken and passed Step 1 of either the USMLE or osteopathic national exams by the time of their scheduled interview.

6.   Applicants who are international medical graduates (IMG) must be ECFMG certified prior to entry into our program.  At the time of interview, pending certification is satisfactory.

7.   J-1 visa sponsorship is acceptable.  H-1 visa sponsorship will be considered on a case-by-case basis at the time of interview.

8.   We do not require any previous US clinical training.  However, we desire applicants not to have been away from clinical medicine for more than 3 years.

9.   The majority of IMG applicants who have interviewed and matched with us have had scores of 80 and above on USMLE Step 1, and 85 & above on Step 2.

Sincerely yours,
