Education - Other
Aspects
The weekly Monday Conference
(Red
Cell Rounds) includes
discussion of the basic
science of hematology.
Hematology Fellows are
also encouraged to present
conferences themselves
on aspects of science
in hematology. During
the two weekly conferences,
these aspects of training
are discussed including
medical statistics and
medical decision making.
Quality management is
an integral part of the
hematology and medical
oncology activities at
the Buffalo VA Medical
Center and the Fellows
are involved in these
processes. The results
of these processes are
presented at the clinical
conferences which are
attended by quality improvement
and risk management staff
from the medical center.
There is a multidisciplinary
approach at all three institutions
for patient care including
participation with nursing,
social work, dietetics, psychology
and chaplain services at
the VA Medical Center. Weekly
meetings are held with these
staff members to discuss
the total aspects of patient
care including discharge
planning and long-term social
issues. At the Erie County
Medical Center, a number
of patients with sickle cell
disease and with HIV related
problems are followed and
likewise the multiple non-medical
aspects of these diseases
are managed by consultation
between the hematology staff
and other hospital staff.
