Fellowship Program - Inpatient Facilties
Buffalo General Hospital
A large number of patients with complex hematologic disorders are followed at the Buffalo General Hospital. This includes a number of patients with diseases requiring tertiary referral including complex coagulation disorders, hemoglobinopathies, lymphoproliferative diseases, myeloproliferative diseases, myelodysplastic diseases, acute leukemia and genetic hematologic disorders. Morphologic evaluation of blood and bone marrow is particularly stressed at this site as is the use of complex coagulation testing to evaluate clotting disorders. The evaluation of surgical patients with hematologic disorders is also common at this site. The fellows generally spend four months on this rotation. The Hematology Fellow will be involved in the care of approximately 10-15 patients of which he or she will have direct patient care responsibility for between 1 and 5 patients.
Erie County Medical Center
This rotation stresses laboratory medicine and blood banking. The Hematology Fellow is in the chain of command for dealing with medical problems in the Blood Bank and in the day-to-day operations of the Diagnostic Hematology Laboratory. The Hemophilia Center is located at this site and the management of patients with bleeding disorders is a major part of this rotation. The fellows at this site also conduct phlebotomy and aphoresis. Hematologic consultation from the large AIDS population there and from the trauma center present opportunities to study basic pathophysiologic mechanisms of anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia and management of the immuno-compromised host. The fellow spends four months at this site. The Hematology Fellow will be responsible for the care of approximately 10 inpatients, all of which the resident will serve as a consultant.
Department of Veterans Affairs Western New York Healthcare System
In this combined Hematology/Oncology Service, numerous patients with neoplastic diseases are diagnosed and treated and the fellow gains a great deal of experience in managing and administering chemotherapy and understanding the pharmacokinetics and toxicity of chemotherapeutic agents. Multiple opportunities for the evaluation of patients with disorders that require hematopathologic evaluation are present at this site. The fellow also evaluates and participates in the care of patients undergoing radiation therapy and in preparation for oncologic surgery. At this site, they participate in the care of patients requiring lumbar puncture with chemotherapy and patients with indwelling access catheters. The fellow spends four months at this site. The Fellow will be responsible for the care of between 5 and 10 patients of which he or she may have direct patient care responsibility from 1 to 5 patients.
Roswell Park Cancer Institute
The Roswell Park Cancer Institute maintains an active bone marrow transplant unit for both autologous and allogenic bone marrow transplantation. Hematology Fellows who have not obtained this experience during oncology training will rotate through this unit. Roswell Park Cancer Institute is also a site for the treatment of pediatric patients with hematologic malignancies.
