Fellowship Program
The Hematology Fellowship Program in the Department of Medicine at the State University of New York at Buffalo provides a broad base for learning about patients with hematologic disorders, both malignant and nonmalignant and in developing clinical skills related to the care of these patients. The Fellowship emphasizes teaching not only of patients but also of residents, medical students and other staff.
For a two-year Hematology Fellowship, trainees spend one year in core clinical activities which include three four-month rotations at the major clinical sites of activity for the internal medicine residents in the Department of Medicine, that is, this includes rotations at the Buffalo General Hospital, the Erie County Medical Center, and the Department of Veterans Affairs Western New York Healthcare System.
For the remaining year of the Fellowship Program, the trainee is involved in outpatient clinical activities, elective rotations as needed for the fellow’s clinical skills including, if necessary, rotations in bone marrow transplantation.
For fellows who are completing a three-year combined hematology and medical oncology fellowship, the core 12 months of clinical activities are the same and the fellows spend the remaining 6 months rather than 12 months on the elective activities. This 6 or 12 month period of time on elective activities includes a major emphasis in developing research skills. These research activities may be in basic science research activities or in clinical outcomes research. The specific details of the experience are outlined below.
