Education Program
For inpatient activity, the attendings rotate monthly and evaluate each consultation with the hematology fellow and other trainees on service. Technical procedures are handled by a certification system where an uncertified trainee would be observed by an individual certified in the procedure. After an appropriate number of procedures have been observed and recorded, the Fellows are then credentialed in that procedure. Ongoing monitoring of the selection of procedure and the evaluation of results is conducted during rounds and during weekly conferences. Quality Assurance activities are conducted on all services and the results of these activities are routinely presented at periodic conferences.
For inpatient services, rounds are conducted daily on weekdays and usually once per weekend with the attending faculty usually evaluating patients directly. Teaching conferences are conducted separate from management rounds, although teaching and patient care decision tend to be conducted at the same time during daily rounds.
During the first or core year of hematology fellowship, the Hematology Fellows supervise PGY1, 2 and 3 residents and themselves learn to carry out consults and conduct procedures under the direction of the hematology attending staff. During the second year of the hematology fellowship, the hematology fellows devote a greater proportion of their time to conducting clinical research and play a greater supervisory role in conducting rounds and conferences under the guidance of the attendings.
The hematology fellows present approximately one out of four of the weekly "Red Cell Rounds" conferences and approximately one out of three of the weekly clinical conferences. In addition, they conduct conferences for internal medicine residents in basic aspects of hematology including evaluation of cytopenias and management of hematologic problems. The Hematology Fellows are rather heavily involved in preparing and presenting conferences in the Division.
