Monday Afternoon "Red Cell Rounds" Conference - 4:30 pm, VA room 1104

Red Cell Rounds is a conference intended to serve two goals. The first is a journal club where Fellows and Hematology Faculty rotate responsibility for reviewing new literature on specific hematology topics. The second goal is to serve as a research conference where research topics are reviewed including our research activities or review of research issues in the current literature.

Specific Goals:

  1. To provide discussion of specific topics in hematology, stressing underlying pathophysiology and newer research based techniques.
  2. To provide fellows an opportunity to critically review medical literature related to hematology and medical oncology.
  3. To provide a format for individuals outside of the Division to present topics related to hematology.
  4. To develop new protocols for treatment or study in our Division.
  5. To meet requirements defined by the Hematology Fellow curriculum.

Weekly Case Conference - Wednesdays, 12 noon, VA room 1109C

The Wednesday Noon Conference is a case based teaching conference with active participation from pathology, radiation medicine, surgery and general internal medicine as well as hematology and medical oncology. The hematology/medical oncology attending is responsible for case selection and arranging for presentations. This conference includes presentation of VA patients as well as presentation of patients seen by community based physicians. Approximately once per month the conference has the format of a tumor board with presentations of patients from surgery with a multi-disciplinary discussion of treatment including input from radiation medicine.

The purpose of this conference is to serve as an educational foundation for discussion of diagnosis and treatment of hematology and medical oncology disorders. Hematology Fellows frequently develop presentations regarding the topics exemplified by the cases. There is also active participation by residents in internal medicine, pathology, radiation oncology, surgery (including thoracic and urologic surgery) and radiology. This conference also includes discussions of quality assurance issues within hematology and medical oncology. Periodically the quality of the conference itself is reviewed by attendees.

Goals and objectives

  1. Provide education for students, house staff, attendings and other ancillary medical personnel in specific topics of hematology and medical oncology.
  2. Provide an opportunity for hematology fellows and residents to prepare discussions regarding these selected topics.
  3. Provide a forum for interdisciplinary discussion of diagnosis and treatment of hematology and medical oncologic disorders.
  4. Allow frequent updates of newer diagnostic techniques, pathologic classification of diseases and treatment of these diseases.
  5. Allow interdisciplinary discussion of quality management issues including continuous quality improvement, risk management, utilization review and clinical guidelines.
  6. Provide a forum for clinical and academic interaction between geographic full-time faculty and community based physicians in hematology and medical oncology.
