Education - Fellowship
The fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at the State University
of New York at Buffalo was established on July 1, 1980.
The program is ACGME (The Accreditation Council for
Graduate Medical Education) accredited and can lead
to Certification of Added Qualifications in Geriatric
Medicine as approved by the American Board of Internal
Medicine and the American Board of Family Medicine.
The Fellowship is a one-year training program devoted
primarily to clinical and didactic experiences to provide
a sound knowledge base in geriatric medicine. The clinical
experiences include longitudinal contact with the elderly
persons in ambulatory, home, and nursing home settings
and in a hospital based acute care and consultation
service. In addition, there are rotations in neurology,
geriatric psychiatry, rheumatology and rehabilitation
medicine, and hospice care. Teaching of medical students
and residents is also an important component of the
fellowship. This includes teaching of physical diagnosis
and supervision of residents on the geriatric unit.
Supporting the geriatric clinical training components is
a series of educational activities, which provide both
the fellows and faculty with several important learning
opportunities. These activities include:
- monthly geriatric core
topic seminars
- monthly clinical case/ethics
conferences
- monthly clinical research

- monthly journal clubs
that focus on current literature relevant to clinical
aspects of geriatrics and the biology of aging
