Geriatrics and gerontology have had a presence at the University at Buffalo for over 30 years with the establishment the Fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at the University at Buffalo on July 1, 1980. In addition the Division also offers a Fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Faculty members within the Division provide clinical care, engage in research, and contribute to the education of medical students, post-graduate trainees in medicine, family medicine, emergency medicine, and surgery, and of practicing physicians in internal medicine, family medicine, emergency medicine and surgery. The faculty's strengths include:

  • Management of behavior disturbances associated with dementia
  • Palliative care
  • Pain management
  • Rehabilitation
  • Osteoporosis
  • Vitamin D
  • Frailty

The multi-disciplinary programs of the Division interface with nursing homes, tertiary-care hospitals and community-based settings. Participating institutions include the VA Western New York Healthcare System, Kaleida Healthcare System (Buffalo General Hospital, DeGraff Memorial Hospital, HighPointe), Erie County Medical Center (ECMC), Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI), the Center for Hospice & Palliative Care (CHPC) and its subsidiary Hospice Buffalo.
