General Internal Medicine
Mission Statement
The Division of General Internal
Medicine (GIM) serves four major
roles: research, education, clinical
service and administration.
Research.
While scholarly activity is encouraged
for all GIM members, the
GIM research unit is charged
specifically with pursuing
grants, performing research,
and publishing papers.
Education.
The GIM unit participates in
the Department of Medicine's
educational mission. For
the resident training program,
we provide over 80% of the
general ward supervision
and 100% of ambulatory supervision
and teaching. Similarly,
for the medical students
(1st year, 2nd year, 3rd
year and 4th year), we provide
major portions of the department's
responsibility. The GIM unit
also provides preceptors
for the residents and is
an integral part of the program.
Clinical Service.
The GIM educational mission is
closely intertwined with
provision of clinical services.
In addition, GIM faculty
provide direct in-patient
and out-patient services.
Administrative.
Individual members of the GIM
division have major administrative
responsibilities. The Division
is comprised of several large
sections for the most part
geographically based. The
integration of our faculty
with each hospital's mission
has resulted in the assignment
of considerable administrative
responsibility to these GIM
members for the smooth functioning
of the clinical entities.
In addition, GIM members
serve as officers within
the Department, the teaching
program, and the University.
