Cardiology
Fellowship Program
The training program in cardiovascular diseases
is designed to prepare individuals who have completed
approved Internal Medicine Residencies for a career
in cardiology. Instruction in all aspects of cardiologic
practice is provided including cardiac catheterization,
2-D, M-mode, and Doppler echocardiography, exercise
stress testing, nuclear cardiology, pediatric
cardiology, clinical cardiac electrophysiology,
coronary care, and consultative cardiology. In
addition, elective time is available in cardiac
surgery, transesophageal and stress echocardiography,
cardiac transplantation and other disciplines
related to cardiology.
As part of the training program, each trainee
participates in an ongoing cardiovascular project
during a four to six month research block. This
exposure allows the individual to develop a better
understanding of data gathering and analysis and
provides a framework for more intelligent decision
making and literature review. Additional research
time and training are available for individuals
anticipating a career in academic cardiology.
The program utilizes the facilities and faculty
of the three major teaching institutions of the
SUNY at Buffalo School of Medicine: Erie County
Medical Center, Kaleida Health, and the Department
of Veteran's Affairs Health Care System. The trainee
is therefore exposed to a wide spectrum of cardiovascular
disease and interacts with the entire SUNY at
Buffalo cardiology faculty.
In all aspects of the training program, increasing
responsibility is emphasized as the fellow progresses
from a first-year fellow to a third-year fellow.
