Delacroix, Eugene (French, 1798-1863)

The Consultation

Reference Type:
Artwork
Year:
1820
Notes/Description:
This image represents four doctors discussing the prospects of the apparently deathly ill man in the bed behind them. The body language of the older physicians implies that they have already sadly resigned themselves to the patient’s fate, but the younger man energetically promotes a new course of action that might save him. A skeleton representing death sits waiting to see if his scythe will be needed in the near future or if he will have to return later. On another level, the image refers to the political situation at the time, a scenario in which the dying patient would symbolize France. Notes by Mariann Smith
