Anatomy of the Heart; She Too Had a Heart; Autopsy

Reference Type:
Artwork
Year:
1890
Notes/Description:
In this stark and clinical setting, a physician holds the heart of his beautiful young patient. The lack of medical students or other figures emphasizes the quiet contemplation on the doctor’s face. He seems to be thinking about the heart rather than studying it as a part of human anatomy. What he might be considering is suggested by one of the titles for the painting: “She too had a heart.” This implies that the woman might have been a prostitute, and the thought that perhaps she, like others, had feelings has made the doctor stop and think about his preconceptions and assumptions.
